Winter Garden Senior Pictures: Oakland Nature Preserve + Downtown

Sebastian was probably one of the most easygoing senior guys I’ve ever photographed. He was comfortable in front of the camera, easy to talk to and completely game for whatever his mom and I wanted to try. And we tried a little bit of everything that morning.

His senior pictures started at Oakland Nature Preserve. He wore a tan suit with his cap and gown, and we created two graduation photographs his mom really wanted. Then we headed into Downtown Winter Garden. He changed into shorts and a black shirt before we finished on top of the parking garage. Those ended up being some of my favorite photographs from his entire session.

Somewhere in the middle, the Florida heat won. Everyone was hot and hungry, so we stopped at Foxtail for breakfast, a coffee drink and a few minutes in the air conditioning. It wasn’t part of the plan, but it was exactly what we needed.

Starting at Oakland Nature Preserve

Oakland Nature Preserve was our first stop, and Sebastian started in his tan suit with his cap and gown. His mom had two creative photographs she had been hoping to create. We made those a priority while we were there.

The first was inspired by Toy Story. We photographed Sebastian walking away with the characters behind him. It was such a fun way to show him finishing high school and heading into what comes next. The photograph still felt playful instead of overly serious.

The other was the “End School Zone” photograph that has become a fun senior-picture trend. We photographed Sebastian walking past the sign as another little nod to being finished with this part of school.

Why I Want Parents to Share Their Ideas

Neither of those photographs would have been on my normal shot list. And I mean that as a good thing.

If you have a photograph saved or an idea you’ve been thinking about, please show me. I would much rather know what matters to you than have you leave the session wishing we had tried it.

My job isn’t to copy somebody else’s photograph exactly. It’s to figure out what you love about the idea. Then I can create a version that fits your senior and the rest of the session.

Sebastian never made any of it feel like it was just Mom’s idea that he was tolerating. He was game to try it, we got the photographs she wanted and then we kept going. That easygoing personality stayed with us for the rest of the morning.

From Oakland to Downtown Winter Garden

Once we finished at Oakland Nature Preserve, we headed into Downtown Winter Garden for the second part of Sebastian’s senior pictures.

By that point, the Florida heat had definitely shown up. Sebastian and his mom hadn’t eaten breakfast yet, so we made a spontaneous stop at Foxtail when it was time for his outfit change. They grabbed something to eat and a coffee drink, and everyone got a few minutes in the air conditioning.

Honestly, it was exactly the reset we needed before heading back outside.

I always go into a senior session with a plan. But I’m not going to make everyone keep going just because something is written on the schedule. If we need a few minutes to cool off or grab something to eat, we take them. The plan is supposed to help the session—not make the morning harder.

Why I Love Downtown Winter Garden for Senior Pictures

When we headed back outside, Sebastian had changed into shorts and a black shirt. It was a completely different look from the suit and graduation photographs we had just created in Oakland.

I love photographing senior pictures in Downtown Winter Garden because we can do so much in one area. We don’t have to spend half the session in the car. We can walk a little, stop when I see great light or a background I like, create what I want there and then keep moving.

There are storefronts, streets, architecture, different textures and plenty of little spots that photograph completely differently from one another. That’s why Downtown Winter Garden is also included in my guide to the best locations for senior pictures in Orlando.

Sebastian was comfortable from the beginning, so I didn’t need to pull a big performance out of him. I could give him some direction, let him settle into it and photograph the personality that was already there.

That’s especially helpful with senior guys. We can walk, talk and keep the session moving instead of standing in one place trying to force the same smile over and over again.

Ending the Session on the Parking Garage

We saved the top of the Downtown Winter Garden parking garage for the end, and I’m so glad we did. These were some of my favorite photographs from the entire morning.

I love the open sky up there and the more urban look it gives us. There isn’t a lot competing with the person I’m photographing, but it still feels completely different from the greenery in Oakland and the streets below us.

Sebastian’s black shirt worked perfectly up there too.

The rooftop photographs don’t look anything like the ones we created with his suit and cap and gown at Oakland Nature Preserve. I love that we were able to get both looks without doing anything that felt like we were trying to turn him into somebody else.

Senior Pictures Should Be a Collaborative Process

I loved that Sebastian’s mom came to the session with ideas and that he was happy to try them. That’s exactly how I want the planning process to work.

I don’t want to decide every detail without you. I also don’t want to hand you a list and expect you to figure out the entire session on your own.

Some seniors know exactly what they want. Sometimes Mom has a whole folder of photographs saved. Other families have the outfits but no clue where they want to go. And plenty of people reach out to me without knowing where to begin.

All of those are completely fine.

My job is to ask the right questions, listen to both of you and help pull the pieces together. I’ll help with the locations and outfits, guide your senior throughout the session and make sure we create the photographs that matter to you.

For Sebastian, that meant making time for the two creative graduation ideas his mom brought to me. But it also meant giving him plenty of photographs that had nothing to do with props or graduation. Winter Garden Senior Pictures: Frequently Asked Questions

Where can you take senior pictures in Winter Garden?

Downtown Winter Garden is one of my favorite options because we can create so many different looks in a fairly small area. There are streets, storefronts, architecture and more urban spots like the parking garage. Oakland Nature Preserve is nearby when you want to add greenery and a more natural setting too.

Can we use more than one location for senior pictures?

Sometimes. It depends on the session, the distance between locations and what we’re trying to fit into the time we have. Sebastian’s senior pictures started at Oakland Nature Preserve and continued in Downtown Winter Garden, so we were able to create graduation, natural, downtown and rooftop photographs during the same morning.

Can parents bring ideas for senior pictures?

Absolutely. Please send them to me. I want to know if there is a photograph or idea that is important to you. Sebastian’s mom brought me the Toy Story-inspired idea and the “End School Zone” photograph, and we made sure we created both.

Is Downtown Winter Garden a good location for senior pictures for guys?

Yes. I love it for senior guys because we can keep walking and use several different backgrounds without making the session feel too formal. The parking garage is also one of my favorite spots for a more urban, editorial look.

What if my senior doesn’t know how to pose?

That is completely normal. Your senior does not need to show up knowing what to do with his hands or how to stand. I’ll guide him through the posing and movement as we go, so he never has to figure it out on his own.
