Mead Botanical Garden Senior Pictures | Josh’s Winter Park Session

Josh’s senior pictures gave us two completely opposite versions of Florida weather.

His actual senior session at Mead Botanical Garden happened on the coldest day of the year. Then, when we photographed his editorial-inspired session in Downtown Winter Garden, we somehow managed to choose the hottest day.

Apparently, Josh and I don’t believe in photographing in normal temperatures. 😂

Thankfully, he handled both like a total pro.

For this session, we wanted to capture Josh in a setting that felt natural while still giving us plenty of variety. Mead Botanical Garden in Winter Park was the perfect choice. Between the tree-lined roads, garden paths and layers of greenery, we were able to create photographs that felt completely different as we moved through the property.

But my favorite part of the session wasn’t the location or even the outfits.

It was watching Josh begin to see what I was seeing through my camera.

Senior Pictures at Mead Botanical Garden in Winter Park

Mead Botanical Garden is one of those locations where we can create several different looks without needing to spend the session driving from place to place.

The tall trees and garden areas gave us the natural setting we wanted, while the paved road created a cleaner, more structured background for some of Josh’s portraits. Even in the middle of winter, there was plenty of greenery and texture to work with.

The colder weather also worked perfectly with his outfits.

For one look, Josh wore a brown, burgundy and tan argyle sweater layered over a light blue collared shirt with relaxed jeans and black shoes. The deeper colors looked so good against the greens and warm tones throughout the garden.

His second outfit had a completely different personality. He paired an oversized black cardigan with a light blue collared shirt, black tie, long denim shorts, white socks and black shoes.

It was such a cool look and felt completely like Josh. The cardigan and tie gave it a slightly dressed-up feel, but the denim shorts kept it from looking too formal. It also photographed beautifully with his guitar.

The Moment Josh Realized He Was a Rock Star

Like a lot of seniors, Josh didn’t begin the session already knowing exactly what to do in front of the camera.

He didn’t need to.

That’s my job.

As we worked through different poses and locations, I could see him becoming more comfortable. Then I showed him a few photographs on the back of my camera, and something shifted.

He started realizing what an absolute rock star he was.

Seeing those images gave him so much confidence. He could see that everything we were doing was working, and from that point on, he relaxed into the experience even more.

That is one of the reasons I love showing seniors a few photographs during their sessions. It isn’t just about proving that we’re getting good images. Sometimes they need to see themselves the way I’m already seeing them.

Confident. Interesting. Completely worthy of being photographed.

By then, Josh and I had settled into an easy rhythm. We were comfortable with each other, we could laugh between photographs, and we were just having a genuinely good time creating together.

That connection makes such a difference. When seniors know they don’t have to perform or figure everything out on their own, they can begin to enjoy the experience. That’s when their real personality starts showing up.

Bringing Josh’s Guitar Into His Senior Pictures

Josh brought his acoustic guitar with him, which gave us a way to include something that is genuinely important to him.

Personal items can add so much to senior pictures, especially when they represent more than just a hobby. They help tell the story of who that senior is during this season of his life.

We created several portraits with Josh and his guitar throughout the garden. Sometimes it was beside him, and sometimes it became the focus of what he was doing. It fit naturally into the setting and gave him something familiar to connect with in front of the camera.

And, of course, it looked pretty great with that black cardigan and tie.

Senior Pictures Can Capture More Than How Someone Looks

At the end of Josh’s session, we created something especially meaningful.

Josh serves on the worship team at his church, so we took a few photographs of him worshiping with his guitar in the garden.

These weren’t simply photographs of him posing with an instrument. They captured something that is a real part of who he is.

I thought the peaceful garden setting was such a fitting place to create them. There was no elaborate setup or complicated concept. It was Josh, his guitar, his faith and something he genuinely loves.

Both Josh and his mom absolutely loved those photographs, and I did too.

Those are the photographs that often become the most meaningful. The traditional portraits matter, but the images that show a senior doing something they love can hold an entirely different kind of value.

Years from now, Josh and his family won’t only remember what he looked like during his senior year. They’ll have photographs that represent his faith, his music and the place he was in his life at that moment.

That is what personalized senior pictures should do.

Choosing Meaningful Ideas for Senior Pictures

Not every senior needs to bring a guitar, sports equipment or another prop to have photographs that feel personal.

Sometimes personality comes through in the outfits. Sometimes it’s the location, the expressions or the style of the photographs. Other times, there is something important in a senior’s life that deserves to be included.

The goal isn’t to add something just for the sake of having a prop.

It’s to ask what matters to your senior and decide if there is a natural way to bring that into the session.

Josh’s guitar made sense because music and worship are part of his life. The argyle sweater, cardigan, tie and denim also reflected his personal style instead of making him look like someone he wasn’t.

All of those choices worked together to create photographs that felt like Josh.

Two Sessions and Two Completely Different Sides of Josh

Later, Josh and I created a second shoot together in Downtown Winter Garden.

That session had an editorial, fashion-inspired direction with denim, downtown streets, a parking garage and creative off-camera lighting. It looked completely different from his senior pictures at Mead Botanical Garden.

And that’s exactly what I love about the two galleries.

This session gave us gardens, softer natural surroundings, personal outfits, his guitar and the meaningful worship photographs. His Downtown Winter Garden senior pictures gave us stronger expressions, urban backgrounds and more room to experiment.

Both sessions showed a different part of Josh, and both still felt completely like him.

Senior pictures don’t need to fit into one narrow idea of what a senior guy’s photographs are supposed to look like. They can be natural, creative, meaningful, fashion-inspired or a combination of several things.
