Most aren’t practicing poses in the mirror or saving inspiration photos on Pinterest. They’re doing this because their parents asked them to, and they’re hoping it won’t take too long.
That’s exactly why I approach senior boy sessions differently.
This session at Lake Louisa State Park in Clermont is a perfect example of what can happen when a senior doesn’t have to worry about what to do and can simply enjoy the experience. That’s exactly what I strive for during every senior photography experience.

One of the reasons I love photographing seniors here is the variety. Within a short walk, we can move from wide-open fields to wooded trails, weathered fences, lakeside views, and beautiful golden light. It gives every gallery plenty of variety while still feeling cohesive.

Why Lake Louisa Is One of My Favorite Places for Senior Pictures
One of the reasons I recommend Lake Louisa State Park so often is because it offers so much variety without ever feeling crowded or repetitive. During one session, we can photograph in wide open fields, under towering oak trees, along rustic fences, and near the water, all without spending a lot of time driving from one location to another.
The light here is especially beautiful in the evening. As the sun gets lower, the fields glow with warm golden light that photographs beautifully in every season. Photographing His Eagle Scout Achievement
One of my favorite parts of this session had nothing to do with the location.
He brought his Eagle Scout uniform.
If you’ve ever had a child earn Eagle Scout, then you know that uniform represents years of hard work, leadership, service, and perseverance. It’s so much more than another outfit change.
As a Boy Scout mom myself—and because our boys were even in the same troop—I know exactly what that accomplishment means.
Those were the images I knew his family would treasure years from now.
We kept everything simple. Strong posture, clean composition, beautiful light, and just enough guidance so the portraits felt confident without looking overly posed.
Sometimes the simplest images carry the most meaning.
Senior Boy Pictures Don’t Need Complicated Poses
One thing parents tell me all the time is,
“I just want him to look like himself.”
Honestly, that’s my goal too.
Most senior boys don’t want dramatic posing or anything that feels forced. They want direction that feels natural and doesn’t make them wonder where to put their hands every five seconds.
That’s where experience makes all the difference.
Throughout the session, I guided him with small adjustments instead of rigid poses. A slight turn of the shoulders. Walking instead of standing still. Leaning against a fence. Looking toward the sunset.
Nothing complicated.

The Best Photos Happened at the End
One of my favorite memories from this session happened after we had already captured everything we needed.
Throughout the evening he kept eyeing a tree nearby, asking if he could climb it.
I kept laughing and telling him we’d save that for the very end.
Once the “must-have” photos were finished, he finally climbed it.
Those weren’t the polished portraits his parents were expecting.
They were simply him.
Relaxed. Comfortable. Having fun.
And that’s exactly why I love ending sessions with a little freedom. Once seniors realize there’s no pressure left, their personalities usually come out in ways you can’t plan.
