Creative Senior Pictures in Orlando: A 1950s-Inspired Diner Session

When Addie came to me with the idea of doing a 50s-inspired shoot as part of her senior pictures, I was immediately in. I love when my seniors bring their own ideas to me because that’s when we can create something that feels completely personal to them.

And Addie definitely came ready to create.

Her senior experience was actually made up of three completely different concepts, each one showing a different side of her personality. We created a book lover senior session, a whimsical senior session, and then went in a completely different direction for these 50s-inspired senior pictures at Downtown Diner in Celebration, Florida.

Addie has a bit of an old soul, so this concept fit her perfectly. And because this was our third shoot together, we already knew each other so well. She trusted me, I knew how to photograph her, and we were able to have fun with the whole idea.

Three concepts, three completely different moods, and one senior.

That’s exactly what I love about senior photography. You don’t have to choose one version of yourself and make every photograph fit into it.

A 50s-Inspired Senior Session at Downtown Diner in Celebration

For this part of Addie’s senior experience, we headed to Downtown Diner in Celebration, Florida, just outside Orlando. It gave us the retro diner setting we needed for the idea Addie had envisioned.

But the location was only one piece of it.

Addie wore the cutest red polka-dot dress, and Marie from Lovely Hair Makeup absolutely knocked her hair and makeup out of the park. We knew we wanted a 50s-inspired look, but what Marie created was even better than we had imagined. Once Addie was completely styled and standing inside the diner, it truly felt like she had stepped back into the 1950s.

And then there was the sundae.

In some of the photos, Addie has what looks like a very convincing ice cream sundae sitting in front of her. Except it isn’t ice cream at all.

It’s a candle.

Her mom happened to find it while she was shopping and bought it specifically for the session. It ended up being the perfect little prop for the diner.

Those are the kinds of details I love. I can help with locations, styling, lighting, posing and figuring out how to bring an idea together, but I don’t want to be the only person contributing creatively. Some of my favorite sessions happen when my seniors and their parents bring their own ideas, inspiration and unexpected finds into the process.

Creative Senior Pictures Can Show More Than One Side of You

Addie’s three shoots are such a good example of something I wish more seniors realized: your senior pictures don’t have to fit one aesthetic.

You can love books and want photographs inspired by that part of your personality. You can also want something dreamy and whimsical. And you can absolutely put on a red polka-dot dress, get completely transformed into a 1950s girl and spend part of an afternoon taking pictures in a retro diner.

Those things don’t compete with each other. They’re different pieces of who you are right now.

Addie’s Session Helped Inspire The Creative Series

Sessions like this one are also part of what inspired something new I’m offering my booked seniors: The Creative Series.

For years, styled and themed shoots have often been associated with senior rep and ambassador programs. I’m taking a different approach.

Instead of creating a separate team, I want to give the seniors who have already chosen me for their senior pictures opportunities to participate in additional creative shoots throughout their senior year.

Throughout the year, I’ll come up with themed, editorial, seasonal and sometimes completely unexpected shoot ideas. My booked seniors will have opportunities to participate in the concepts that speak to them.

And I don’t want every idea to come from me.

Addie’s 50s diner shoot is the perfect example. This was her idea. She brought the concept to me, and together we figured out how to make it happen.

That’s exactly the kind of collaboration I want to continue through the Creative Series.
